Choosing the Right Pressure Gauge: A Beginner’s Guide

Choosing the Right Pressure Gauge: A Beginner’s Guide

July 24, 2023

From planning processes to managing workers, there are many challenges that you will experience on a daily basis when you’re in the oil industry. One of the most difficult challenges that you can encounter is choosing the right instruments for processes. This is especially true when it comes to choosing pressure gauges.

A pressure gauge allows operators to measure the condition of a fluid (liquid or gas). It’s a compact device that shows the difference between two pressures, which is calculated for various purposes.

Here’s a beginner’s guide to choosing the right pressure guide to help you get started:

Mud Pressure Gauges

Mud pressure gauges serve as a very valuable piece of equipment in the oil rig industry. It allows drillers to keep tab of changes in pump pressure during the drilling process and issue an instant alert to help the initiation of corrective measures on time.

They are designed to be extremely durable and sturdy. Some devices contain mud pressure sensors, while others come with diaphragm protectors, both offering dependable and reliable readings.

There are primarily two types of mud pressure gauges: single pointer pressure gauges and compound pressure gauges:

Single Pointer Pressure Gauges

The single pointer pressure gauge is used to indicate pump pressure. It helps operators monitor mud pump operations and detect potential problems with drilling fluids. It’s filled with fluid for added protection against vibrations.

Compound Pressure Gauges

The compound pressure gauge has two-pointers and can calculate pressures up to 16,000 psi (120 MPa). The fine-tuning of pointer sensitivity is fairly simple, owing to the user-adjustable dampening feature.

Readings: The readings of mud pressures gauges are highly accurate, as they can detect and record even the slightest pressure change using a computer pointer system.

Standpipe Pressure Gauges

Standpipe pressure gauges come in three different types: Type D, Type F, and UMG. Type D and F systems come with an internal dampening system that helps minimize gauge fluctuation. The UMG system is equipped with a Bourdon tube that provides precise readings.

Standpipe Pressure Gauges are a smart and sophisticated, yet extremely durable piece of hydraulic equipment that notifies a driller in case of a kick, rig vibration, or similar pressure situations.

The mechanism is pretty straightforward. It contains a built-in dampener assembly and blow-out plug safety that can identify changes in pressure and vibrations in the rig. It immediately sends a prompt so remedial measures can be taken.

Readings: Standpipe Pressure Gauges have a stationary dial and movable pointer, which offer clear visuals and show more precise readings.

Torque Gauge

Torque gauges are another highly functional and valuable kind of equipment used in the oil rigging process. The measuring device allows drillers to measure break-out or make-up torque for drill collars, string components, and tool joints.

Torque gauges have two types: digital and mechanical, both of which provide accurate measurement of torsion during a site testing. They also help drillers during the calibration and verification process.

Readings: Torque gauges can capture accurate peak torque in both clockwise and counter-clockwise direction. Also, the load-sensing sensor results in precise, sensitive readings.

Dual Gauge Manifold Pressure Systems

The dual gauge manifold pressure system consists of two 6″ pressure gauges. The first pressure gauge provides low-pressure readings, while the second one calculates the high-pressure readings. The system can detect the slightest variations in low pressure systems with great accuracy.

Which pressure gauge is the best?

All of the aforementioned pressure gauges take accurate pressure readings. Though one can be better for specific applications, and vice versa, none of these pressure gauges can be labeled better than others.

As a beginner, you can consult with the product manufacturer about which pressure gauge you should buy. They will understand your requirements and suggest a device that caters to your specific needs.
